Andrew Naylor
Based in the World Gold Council’s Singapore office, Andrew has overseen the WGC’s contribution to the development and launch of the AAOIFI Shari’ah Standard on Gold. Following its launch last year, the World Gold Council has undertaken research on the role of gold in Islamic finance, and the characteristics of gold as an asset class in an Islamic context. In addition, the World Gold Council is acting as a catalyst for the development of new Shari’ah-compliant gold products.
Prior to his role at the World Gold Council he was an executive director of the UK-based public affairs consulting firm Cicero Group. He provides political and economic commentary for broadcasters including the BBC, CNBC, Bloomberg and China Central Television.
Andrew is a member of the management committee of the Singapore Bullion Market Association (SBMA) and is chairman of its public affairs committee. He is also a board member of the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.
Andrew has a degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. -
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aznan Hasan
Dr Aznan Hasan is an Associate Professor in Shariah at Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (II/BF), IIUM and the former Head of Islamic Law Department, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia. He is currently the President, Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS) He is also the Deputy Chairman, Shariah Advisory Council, Securities Commission. He is also a member, Shariah Advisory Council AAOIFI. He is also a member, Shariah Advisory Council, HSBC Amanah, Dubai. He was a member, Shariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia for two terms (2006-2008, 2010-2013). Prior to joining SAC of Bank Negara Malaysia, he was the Chairman, Shariah Advisory Board, ACR Retakaful MEA, Bahrain ad SEA, Malaysia, where he was instrumental in the setting up of ACR Retakaful Model from a Shariah point of view. Currently, he is the Chairman, Shariah Committee, Maybank Islamic Berhad and Maybank Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd. He also serves as the Chairman, Shariah Advisory Board, FNB Bank (South Africa), as a member, Shariah Advisory Board, ABSA Islamic Bank (South Africa), Yasaar Limited (London), Khalij Islamic (UK) Limited (London), Amanahraya Berhad, Amanah Raya Asset Management, Employee Provident Fund (EPF) as well as other financial institutions and corporate bodies located locally and internationally. He also serves as Shariah consultant to Maybank Investment Bank and Hong Leong Islamic Bank. He is a registered Shariah Advisor for the Islamic Unit Trust Schemes and Islamic securities (Sukuk), Securities Commission of Malaysia. He is also a member, Shariah Supervisory Board and Investment Committee, Waqaf Foundation, a corporate entity formed by the Government to oversee the application of Waqaf in Malaysia. He is also invited by several Zakat Centres in Malaysia to give advice on zakat matters in Malaysia.
Dr Aznan has conducted and published more than 50 researches and presented more than 100 presentations.
Dr Aznan Hasan received his first Degree in Shariah from University of Al-Azhar (1994). He then successfully completed his Master degree in Shariah from Cairo University with distinction (Mumtaz) (1998) and his thesis was recommended for publication. He then obtained his Ph.D from University of Wales, Lampeter, United Kingdom (2003). -
Baha Osman

Baha is a senior banker with a career in Investment banking spanning over 2 decades. During his career, Baha has held positions as senior Vice President and trader for Citigroup London Treasury, where he spent over 12 years in the Global Corporate and Investment Bank Treasury. A Senior fixed income and derivatives manager for US Treasuries and European bond markets, sovereign bonds trading as well as being responsible for all emerging market balance sheets trading and management for Citigroup London GCIB Treasury. He has also worked in the Middle East region - both earlier during the Gulf War with Citibank Bahrain Treasury and subsequently in 2006 as Director of Global Markets at Standard Chartered Bank in the UAE, followed by a Senior Treasury Executive Manager for a Kuwaiti Bank.
Baha made his transition and moved to Islamic Banking in early 2011, when he took up the opportunity as Executive Director and Head of Treasury for the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM), headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, established under the IILM act of parliament on 25th October 2010. Baha was among the initial senior executive management team tasked with the set-up and followed by the subsequent successful inaugural Sukuk Issuance with a supporting system of global primary dealer banks, an eco-trading and repo system. The IILM is an Islamic international organisation set-up by Central Banks, Monetary Authorities and a Multilateral Organisations. -
Danial Mah Abdullah
Mr Danial is the Director-General of Labuan FSA, the regulatory authority of Labuan International Business and Financial Centre. Mr Danial assumed the position of Director-General with effect from 3 October 2017. Prior to this, he was the Deputy Director-General of Labuan FSA, a position he held since 2007. He has worked in Labuan FSA since the early years of its establishment and held various positions in the organisation.
Mr Danial is a Board member of International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM) and member of its Executive Committee. He is chairman of the Financial Stability Committee Labuan FSA and a Board member of the Labuan Corporation, Financial Park Labuan, Labuan IBFC Incorporated Sdn Bhd, LabuanFSA Incorporated Sdn Bhd and Pristine Era Sdn Bhd. He also chairs the council of Labuan IBFC Foundation and member of the Port Consultative Committee for Lembaga Pelabuhan Labuan (LPL).
Mr Danial has a Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) from the University of Malaya, Malaysia; and a Masters in Business Administration from the Manchester Business School, UK. He is a Chartered Accountant registered with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants. -
Dr. Aida Othman
Dr Aida Othman is a Partner at Zaid Ibrahim & Co., a member of the ZICO Law network. She is also the managing director of ZICO Shariah Advisory Services. Dr Aida specializes in Islamic banking and finance, Islamic capital market instruments and takaful products and operations. She also advises on Shariah compliance and governance, including on the legal and regulatory framework for Islamic finance.
In particular she has advised on the structure and documentation for both Islamic corporate and retail financing, the legal and regulatory framework for Islamic financial services, structuring and Shariah compliance issues for sukuk issuance, private equity funds and unit trust funds, Shariah review and Shariah audit of Islamic financial institutions, takaful products and operations, Islamic wealth planning and management, and halal assurance systems and halal certification.
In addition to being and Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, Dr Aida is also a panel arbitrator for Islamic finance or other Shariah related disputes at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA), a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), United Kingdom, member of the Technical Working Group on Ethics of the Accounting & Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), Bahrain, member of the Islamic Finance Committee, Bar Council of Malaysia, a member of the Specialists’ Committee of LIBFC. Dr Aida also serves on the Shariah committees of PNB and HSBC Amanah, and has authored various chapters and publications on the subject of Islamic Finance and Shariah governance. -
Dr. Akram Laldin
Prof. Dr. Mohamad Akram is currently the Executive Director of International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) and Professor at International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). Prior to joining ISRA he was an Assistant Professor at the Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). In the period 2002-2004, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. At present, he is the Member of Bank Negara Malaysia Shari’ah Advisory Council, Chairman of Shari’ah Board of Employees Provident Fund Malaysia (EPF), Member of Shari’ah Supervisory Council of Labuan Financial Services Authority (FSA), Member of Shariah Advisory Board ZI Shari’ah Advisory, Member of Shari’ah Advisor of Dar Al Takaful, Dubai, Member of Shari’ah Advisory Board, Eco Islamic Bank, Republic of Kyrgstan, Member of Shari’ah Advisory Council of International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM),Bahrain, Member of Shari’ah Advisor of National Takaful Company PSC, Watania, Abu Dhabi, Member Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts (FRACE), Central Bank of Nigeria, Member of The Panel of Recognized International Market Experts in Finance (“P.R.I.M.E. Prof. Akram holds a B.A. Honours degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Legislation from the University of Jordan, Amman and a Ph.D. in Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He has presented many papers related to Islamic Banking and Finance and other Fiqh topics at national and International level and has conducted many training sessions particularly on Islamic Banking and Finance for different sectors since 1999. He is a registered Shari’ah Advisor for Islamic Securities with the Securities Commission of Malaysia and has acted as Shari’ah advisor in the issuance of several Sukuk. In addition, he is also prolific author of academic works specifically in the areas of Islamic Banking and Finance. He is the recipient of Zaki Badawi Award for Excellence in Shari’ah Advisory and Research. Recipient of the Most Outstanding Individual Contribution to Islamic Finance during KLIFF 2016 organized by CERT. Winner of the 2017/1439H Malaysian Islamic Personality Award conferred by The Government of Malaysia on the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). -
Hammad Hassan
Hammad has over twenty three years of banking experience in Corporate & Consumer Banking, Global Transaction Services and Islamic Finance. He has been with Bank ABC Islamic since 2005. Prior to joining Bank ABC, Hammad worked for over eleven years with Citigroup and its affiliate in Saudi Arabia, Samba Financial Group. Hammad joined Citigroup in Pakistan in 1994 and moved to Samba Financial Group in 1997. In 2005, Hammad joined Bank ABC Islamic as the Head of Coverage. In his current role, he is the Global Head for Islamic Banking for ABC Group as well as the Managing Director for Bank ABC Islamic, Bahrain. Hammad holds a Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering.

Ijlal Ahmed Alvi
Ijlal Alvi has extensive experience in the financial services industry spanning 30 years with regional and international financial institutions. Over the last 13 years, he has been instrumental in introducing standardization in Islamic financial contracts and product confirmations as the Chief Executive of the International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM).
He manages IIFM's market consultations, global working groups, legal and drafting process as well as Shari'ah guidance towards developing standard Islamic financial master agreements, product templates and guidance notes relating to liquidity management, capital market, corporate finance and trade finance.
Mr. Alvi is also a member of several global committees/task-forces on Islamic finance. -
Ismail E. Dadabhoy
Ismail has been involved with the finance industry for the past 30 years, attached to 2 institutions, Merrill Lynch & UBS, covering conventional and Islamic business based out of London, Singapore, Bahrain and Dubai.
Ismail started and headed Islamic Finance for UBS back in 2000 and continued in this field with UBS till he took early retirement in 2011 after 20 years of service.
Currently, Ismail is advising IIFM as an independent advisor and recently set up AIMS, an Islamic advisory services company with 3 other managing partners to serve the financial market covering banks, corporates, takaful and HNWI. -
Kamal Abdelkarim Hassan
Kamal Abdelkarim Hassan is Senior Manager-Financial Institutions as part of the Treasury & Capital Markets Department at Kuwait Finance House (Bahrain). He’s involved in product structuring, arranging and sourcing bilateral, cross-border syndications, trade financing and treasury. He was previously Director of Technical Development at the Accounting & Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), where he oversaw the formulation and issuance of accounting, auditing, governance and Shari’ah standards for the Islamic finance industry. Prior to AAOIFI, he was portfolio manager at John Hancock Financial in Boston, MA – USA.
Mr. Hassan has over ten years’ experience working in the Islamic finance industry. He is a member of Bahrain Institute of Banking & Finance (BIBF) Advisory Committee of Advance Islamic Finance courses and also serves as an external trainer for the institute.
He holds a MBA in Islamic Banking & Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia where he was a Rector Fellow and a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the London School of Economics. -
Khalid Hamad
Mr. Khalid Hamad has held several senior posts at the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB).
His current responsibilities include supervision of all banking institutions, including Islamic banks, licensed by the CBB, as well as inspection of all financial institutions, comprising banks, insurance firms, investment firms, capital market licensees and ancillary services providers.
Mr. Hamad began his career in 1987 with the Bahrain Monetary Agency, the predecessor of the CBB. From 1990 till 2003, he served as Acting Director, Inspection and then as Director, Banking Supervision. In 2003, he joined Ernst & Young in Bahrain, serving as Senior Consultant on Risk Management & Regulatory Services. He rejoined the CBB in his current post in February 2006.
Mr. Hamad has a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Portland, USA, and a Strategic Leadership and Executive Management Program certificate from the University of Columbia, New York.
Mr. Hamad is Chairman of the International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM), Chairman of the Waqf Fund for Research, Education and Training in Islamic Finance, Deputy Chairman of Accountants Affairs Committee, Member of AAOIFI Board of Trustees, an Associate Member of Toronto Strategic Leadership, and Member of GCC Banking Supervision Committee. -
Lawrence Oliver
Lawrence Oliver is a Director of DDCAP and its subsidiaries DD&Co Limited and DDGI Limited.
Lawrence has principal responsibility for the company’s Trading and Trade Support desks and has extensive experience of arranging asset-based transactions that conform to Shari’ah stipulation.
He focuses specifically on Shari’ah compliant structured finance and asset origination and has broad knowledge of the physical commodity sector which has enabled him to re-establish the traditional merchant trading capabilities of DD&Co Limited for the benefit of institutional clients operating within the Islamic financial sector.
Lawrence has worked in the Islamic finance market for more than twenty years. He joined DDCAP in April 1998. Previously he was an Assistant Manager at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson and a member of the team responsible for the Islamic finance and investment activity.
Lawrence is a regular speaker at many of the annual Islamic finance conferences held in the GCC, South East Asia and Europe. -

Mohamed Omarah
Mohamed is a qualified lawyer and has been practicing law in the Banking industry for more than 18 years; during which he advised on wide array of operations such as project finance, trade finance, asset-backed finance, Islamic finance, capital leasing, derivative transactions, loan syndication and retail banking. In addition, he is also in charge of Compliance for the Gulf region and Shari’ah Governance globally for CACIB.
Mohamed’s expertise is in the Middle East and North Africa region. He also has extensive experience in the field of dispute resolution, banking litigation, Compliance issues, Shari’ah review and has a good knowledge of the GCC market in particular.
Mohamed worked with Crédit Agricole Group in the Middle East for almost 16 years during such time he held various positions in the legal department of Egypt and the GCC. He also held a position of a Senior Legal Counsel at National Bank of Abu Dhabi in the UAE. -
Nicholas Edmondes
Nick Edmondes is a Partner based in Trowers & Hamlins LLP's office in Kuala Lumpur. The firm is the first foreign law firm to be granted a qualified foreign law firm licence in Malaysia.
Nick's experience includes project development and finance, privatisation, corporate structuring and inward investment into the UK and Europe. Nick is co-head of the firm's Islamic Finance Group and is client partner for a number of Islamic Financial Institutions.
At Trowers & Hamlins for over 30 years, Nicholas has worked in London and overseas, including as the resident managing partner of the firm's Oman office between 1994 and 2000. He is now a lead and integral member of team dealing with the firm's work for Malaysian and ASEAN clients.
Nick is the co-head of the firm's well regarded Islamic finance group which acts for Islamic institutions from across the Middle East and Asia in relation to a wide range of activities. He also heads up the firm's inward investment group that specialises in advising foreign investors into the UK and Europe.
Nick is a recognised as a Notable Practitioner in Islamic Finance in Chambers & Partners Legal Directory 2014. He is also Legal Expert in the field of Project Energy and Natural Resources (including PFI) in the Legal Business: Legal Experts directory 2010 and has been a member of the UK government sponsored focus groups supporting the UK's transport and financial services industries.
Nick was until 2013, UKTI's Special Representative for financial services to the Sultanate of Oman and GCC Chairman of the UKTI special representatives. Until 2013 he also chaired The City UK's GSS focus group.
Nick has written many articles and has spoken regularly on a variety of topics in the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Oman, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran and Dubai, on diverse subjects from inward investment to the UK, to private sector financing for public sector through port reform, project structures, projects and project finance to Islamic finance. -
Noraizat Shik Ahmad
Noraizat oversees the review and assessment of industry proposals on Islamic capital market (ICM) products and services such as Sukuk, Islamic structured products, Islamic real estate investment trusts, Islamic funds, Islamic exchange traded funds, Islamic structured products as well as the review of Shariah compliant securities. In addition, he also oversees the formulation of policies and guidelines for ICM products and services. Noraizat participates in various speaking engagements and working groups on ICM at both local and international levels.
Prior to joining the Development and Islamic Markets, Noraizat was attached to the SC’s Corporate Finance and Investment, where he was involved in the review of corporate proposals such as initial public offering proposals, fund-raising proposals, mergers and acquisitions as well restructuring schemes.
Noraizat is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and holds a Masters in Islamic Finance from the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), Malaysia. -
Qudeer Latif
Qudeer Latif is the Global Head of Islamic Finance for Clifford Chance. He has worked in London, Dubai and Riyadh with Clifford Chance and his practice covers structuring and implementing Islamic instruments across a number of asset classes including the capital markets, project finance, acquisition finance, structured finance/derivatives and asset finance fields.
Clifford Chance advised on several U.S. billion dollars worth of Islamic finance transactions last year across a number of asset classes and geographies including a number of deals in which Qudeer has been actively involved including, in Asia alone, the USD25 billion Sukuk programme for the Government of Indonesia including the issuance of the USD1.25 billion green Sukuk and the USD780 million Murabahah financing for Yinson Holdings Berhad.

Sarimah Bashah
Sarimah Bashah is the Head of Wealth Management & Affluent Banking Department of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, where she has devoted her 29 years experience not only in banking but also in the field of economics and nutrition. Her journey in Wealth Management started way back in 1996 when Bancassurance was first introduced in Malaysia.
She has an extensive experience and detail interest in strategy, planning, motivation, customer service and even to the extent of grooming. Her recent endeavor in the Wealth Management Business includes the development and launching of the country’s first local Islamic Financial Institution Shariah compliant Gold Account which allows customers to purchase gold from as low as RM10, implementation of the new Takaful Specialist model, introduction of non-financial products as product offerings in BMMB, formation of strategic partnership with major business partners, joint development of custom-made Bancatakaful products, formation of 1st local Islamic Affluent Banking and many other strategic initiatives which is geared towards providing holistic financial planning experience to our customers and meeting stakeholder’s benefit.
Sarimah Bashah is a Certified Behavioural Consultant, IML from USA and was also a president of a Dietetics Association at the Southwest Texas State University. This makes her a Nutritionist by degree but a banker by profession. This led her to her first venture into the corporate world through joining Malaysia Airline System (MAS), where she hand crafted first, business and economy class menus for routes in the USA and South America and won 3 in-flight awards for MAS during her tenure. As interesting as it sounds, her higher calling came after she joined the Banking Industry of which her passion and attention to detail was further sharpened to excel in marketing, selling and training. She has conducted more than 100 seminars and classes on various subjects to date.
She rose in position in banking line after her Degree in Science from the Southwest Texas State University in 1991 and further studies in MBA from USM in 2003 and have since then held critical positions In Maybank, AmBank, Bank Islam and at present Bank Muamalat assuming the roles from Operation Support Executive, Financial Advisor, Business Development Manager, Regional Manager to Head of TWO departments at present. Be it in academic or working life, she had won numerous awards, recognition and accolades and was in fact a JPA scholar sent to oversea based on trial examination in 1986 and had won Terry Scholarship from the Southwest Texas State University for being the top two students from the faculty. She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Association in the USA whereby membership is based on invitation where academic and leadership excellence was the key determinants. Her continuous strive for excellence has led her to current pursue in doing her PhD fully sponsored by the Bank. -
Shamzani Hussain
Shamzani has more than 20 years of banking and financial services experience across Asia Pacific, Middle East, North Africa and Europe. He is currently responsible for FAB SIRAJ, the Islamic Banking window of First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB).
He joined FGB (formerly known as First Gulf Bank) as Global Head of Islamic Banking, Wholesale Banking Group in February 2013 and was given the mandate to establish a world class Islamic Banking business. He launched “FGB Siraj” as a global Islamic Banking franchise and have since secured various industry recognitions and awards to which the most prestigious were The Best Islamic Banking Window Globally 2015 from The Banker/Financial Times, The Best Islamic Trade Finance House for EMEA 2015 by Euromoney and The Most Outstanding Islamic Banking Window Award 2017 from KLIFF. Post-merger of FGB with NBAD (National Bank of Abu Dhabi) FGB SIRAJ is re-branded to FAB SIRAJ under the umbrella of FAB (First Abu Dhabi Bank). This merger has positioned FAB SIRAJ as one of the largest Islamic Banking Windows in the UAE by Asset Size and Profitability.
Shamzani started his career with American Insurance Group (AIG) before joining HSBC in 1996. He was assigned to various roles and geographies across HSBC’s Global Banking & Markets, Cash Management, Personal Banking and Securities Services business prior to being posted to Dubai to join HSBC Amanah (HSBC’s Islamic Banking Division) in 2006. Shamzani’s last role with HSBC Amanah was as Head of Islamic Financial Institutions, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), culminating in 17 years of service (1996-2013) with HSBC.
Shamzani currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the UAE Banking Federation Islamic Banking Technical Committee and represents FAB at the UAE Islamic Banking CEO Committee. He has represented FAB as speaker in various conferences and has published his thought leadership articles in a number of publications.
Shamzani studied Business Administration and Finance at the University of Miami (Florida, USA). He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (International Business and Human Resource Management) from the University of Miami. -
Tahir Ali Sheikh
Tahir Ali Sheikh has nineteen years of experience in capital markets, asset management, project financing and private equity in the Middle East, Central, South and South-East Asia.
Mr. Sheikh is currently the Director and Head Islamic Advisory, Client Coverage – Group Wholesale Banking at CIMB Investment Bank. His previous roles at CIMB include heading Islamic Advisory within the Regional Debt Capital Markets (“DCM”) team and jointly heading the Islamic Asset Management and Investments business.
Mr. Sheikh was previously a Director with the infrastructure-focused private equity fund manager CapAsia, a one-time wholly owned subsidiary of the CIMB Group. Prior to joining CapAsia, Mr. Sheikh led project and corporate finance transactions in the greater Middle East as Vice President with the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank. Mr. Sheikh has also worked as Projects Officer at the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). Mr. Sheikh started his career with BP Exploration and Production in Pakistan in 1996.
Mr. Sheikh has a Master in Public Administration degree from Harvard University and is a CFA Charterholder
